Bad Writing About Games, pt. X

“...I’ve discovered that my wife and I’s obsession isn’t an abnormality.”

IGN.com.

Thanks to Jeriaska for the link.

(I resisted posting this for a while as I don’t really wish to become known primarily as the grammar cop of the game writing world, but it was just too snicker-worthy not to share.)

Honestly, I'm glad someone is doing this. You catch many more spelling and grammatical errors than I do, but I think it keeps the paid writers (and their editors...) honest.

I think it's supposed to be pronounced similarly to the word "ease."

I'm torn on this one. While grammar errors (especially in professional writing) are annoying to me, I'm not necessarily reading game-related articles to improve my grammar. Ultimately I'm looking to be either entertained or informed.

That said, what is "Bad Writing"? If this IGN article was totally bland -- yet had impeccable grammar -- would it be "better"?

Jeriaska:

Jim, I think you's opinion is valid, but somehow I's laughter can't be restrained.

Gerry:

Really the only acceptable use for the word "I's" is contracting "I is". It's never acceptable to use this as a possessive form of "I".

I have the perfect choice for part XI: http://www.defunctgames.com/shows.php?id=bonuslevels-89.

"Yet here is a quickie upgrade to games that are two years old?
...
"Sadly the vehicles aren't the only thing that doesn't work in this fifth console installment.
...
"The problem is, the ridged story mode meant that you couldn't just go in and have a good time...Worse yet, the game actually lies to you. The advertising (and back of the box) suggests that the game is one big streaming world, sort of like Grand Theft Auto but with skateboards (and bikes). But that's not the case at all.

Phil:

Jim d, I think you're right. We're not looking at bad writing here. We're looking at a giant "kick me" sign. It's a joke. At least thesimplicity, Jeriaska, and Gerry treated it as such. I's a little more serious. I prefer my game-related articles to not read like they're an informal email (I'm being generous here) written at the 5th grade level and indistinguishable from the transcript of a drunken rant.
